El proyecto que lidera Bernabé Mallo nace de una pregunta tan antigua como inquietante: ¿cuándo y por qué el ser humano comenzó a necesitar el arte? Para responderla, propone un recorrido que va desde un guijarro con forma de rostro encontrado en Makapansgat (Sudáfrica, hace más de tres millones de años) hasta las salas blancas del Museo de Arte Moderno de Nueva York.
Bajo el título El origen del arte en la especie Homo: de Makapansgat al MoMA, del primate al Sapiens, esta investigación se aleja de los relatos unidisciplinares. Integra, en cambio, aproximaciones desde la filosofía, la neurociencia —con especial atención al funcionamiento cerebral de la experiencia estética—, la prehistoria, la antropología del arte y de los sueños, la psicología, la genética, la biología, la sociología y los estudios comparados entre expresiones humanas y animales.
No se trata solo de describir cuándo aparecieron las primeras formas simbólicas, sino de comprender cómo un sistema biológico —el nuestro, el de un primate más o menos ansioso— desarrolló eso que hoy llamamos arte. ¿Fue un accidente evolutivo? ¿Una adaptación necesaria? ¿Un lujo del cerebro sobrante? El proyecto no da respuestas apresuradas, pero se atreve a trazar preguntas profundas.
Además del desarrollo teórico, se incluye trabajo de campo. La idea es escuchar —en sentido literal y etnográfico— a distintos grupos: animales no humanos (especialmente primates), comunidades humanas de pueblos originarios y personas de cualquier lugar que sientan el arte como algo vivo. Para ello, se recogerán testimonios mediante encuentros directos y encuestas online dirigidas a quienes deseen participar voluntariamente en la investigación.
El objetivo final no es otro que construir una comprensión amplia, matizada y humanamente relevante del origen de la experiencia estética y de su posible función evolutiva dentro del género Homo.
Research Project Presentation
The project led by Bernabé Mallo begins with a question as old as it is unsettling: when and why did human beings start to need art? To answer it, the research proposes a journey from a pebble that resembles a face —found in Makapansgat (South Africa, over three million years ago)— to the white-walled galleries of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Under the title The Origin of Art in the Genus Homo: from Makapansgat to MoMA, from Primate to Sapiens, this study moves beyond single-discipline narratives. Instead, it integrates perspectives from philosophy, neuroscience —with special attention to how the brain enables aesthetic experience— prehistory, the anthropology of art and dreams, psychology, genetics, biology, sociology, and comparative studies between human and animal expressions.
The goal is not merely to describe when the first symbolic forms appeared, but to understand how a biological system —our own, that of a somewhat anxious primate— developed what we now call art. Was it an evolutionary accident? A necessary adaptation? A luxury of the oversized brain? The project offers no quick answers, but it dares to ask profound questions.
In addition to theoretical development, the project includes fieldwork. The intention is to listen —literally and ethnographically— to different groups: non-human animals (especially primates), Indigenous human communities, and people from anywhere who experience art as something alive. Testimonies will be gathered through direct encounters and online surveys aimed at those who wish to participate voluntarily.
The ultimate aim is to build a broad, nuanced, and humanly relevant understanding of the origin of aesthetic experience and its possible evolutionary role within the genus Homo.

But beyond the formal definition, it is an INTERNATIONAL MEETING POINT for people who learn, teach, research, and feel curious about knowledge.
