An Interdisciplinary Approach to the Origin of Art and Aesthetic Experience
¿Por qué un animal simbólico necesita crear belleza? / Why does a symbolic animal need to create beauty?
El arte constituye uno de los fenómenos más complejos y singulares desarrollados por la especie Homo. Desde las primeras formas de sensibilidad simbólica y percepción protoestética hasta las manifestaciones artísticas contemporáneas, la necesidad humana de representar, imaginar y transformar la realidad ha acompañado el desarrollo biológico y cultural de nuestra especie durante cientos de miles de años.
Las publicaciones y proyectos presentados en este espacio parten de una pregunta central:
¿Cómo y por qué un sistema biológico terminó desarrollando aquello que hoy denominamos arte?
A partir de esta cuestión, las investigaciones integran perspectivas procedentes de la filosofía, la neurociencia, la antropología, la psicología, la biología evolutiva, la genética, los estudios de la conciencia y la teoría del arte, con el objetivo de explorar el origen de la experiencia estética y su posible función dentro de la evolución humana.
Art constitutes one of the most complex and singular phenomena developed by the Homo species. From the earliest forms of symbolic sensitivity and proto-aesthetic perception to contemporary artistic manifestations, the human need to represent, imagine, and transform reality has accompanied the biological and cultural development of our species for hundreds of thousands of years.
The publications and research projects presented here begin with a central question:
How and why did a biological system eventually develop what we now call art?
From this perspective, the research integrates philosophy, neuroscience, anthropology, psychology, evolutionary biology, genetics, consciousness studies, and art theory in order to explore the origin of aesthetic experience and its possible role within human evolution.

Una investigación multidisciplinar orientada a comprender cómo surgió la experiencia estética dentro de la evolución humana y qué papel pudo desempeñar el arte en el desarrollo cognitivo, social y simbólico de nuestra especie.

A multidisciplinary investigation aimed at understanding how aesthetic experience emerged within human evolution and what role art may have played in the cognitive, social, and symbolic development of our species.
The project combines theoretical research with fieldwork, including surveys and open participation from individuals interested in contributing perspectives related to creativity, perception, symbolism, and artistic experience.
Filosofía, neurociencia y diálogo interdisciplinar / Philosophy, Neuroscience, and Interdisciplinary Dialogue
Este espacio nace también con la intención de favorecer el diálogo entre disciplinas que históricamente han estudiado la mente humana desde perspectivas diferentes pero complementarias.
La filosofía aporta preguntas fundamentales sobre conciencia, percepción, representación y significado. La neurociencia contribuye al conocimiento empírico sobre el funcionamiento cerebral. La antropología y la biología evolutiva permiten contextualizar estas capacidades dentro de la historia natural de nuestra especie.
Comprender el arte desde esta convergencia interdisciplinar implica no solo estudiar objetos culturales, sino también investigar qué tipo de cerebro, percepción y experiencia hicieron posible su aparición.
This space also emerges from the intention to encourage dialogue between disciplines that have historically studied the human mind from different yet complementary perspectives.
Philosophy contributes fundamental questions concerning consciousness, perception, representation, and meaning. Neuroscience provides empirical knowledge about brain function. Anthropology and evolutionary biology help contextualise these capacities within the natural history of our species.
Understanding art from this interdisciplinary convergence means not only studying cultural objects, but also investigating what kind of brain, perception, and experience made their emergence possible.
